Film I Want to Try
It all begins with an idea.
I’ve decided to start devoting some time to photography research. The last formal training I had was studying abroad in Barcelona, where I took a digital photography class. Just so y’all know, I find digital photography more complicated and daunting than picking up a film camera. Maybe it’s because I started with film and had an amazing teacher who showed me the entire process from film roll to print in the darkroom at my high school.
“How does ISO work on a digital camera?” “What are all these extra buttons?” “Why can’t I match up the vision in my head to the one on the screen?”
These are the questions that come up each time even think about holding a digital camera. Don’t get me wrong, I do love the [P] setting on my Minolta X-700, but there’s just something satisfying about pushing down a button, turning a dial, and advancing your own film that digital has streamlined and hidden. I’m sure if I put the same amount of time and effort into learning digital as I have film I’d get it, but it hasn’t and currently doesn’t peak my interest to learn.
ANYWAY the first stop in my research is looking up different film stocks! I fell in love with the Ilford XP2 Plus while in Japan last April. The combination of the camera and film produced beautiful shots with an almost blue tint to them. That may have been the chemistry or equipment used in the remote camera store I found in Ishikawa where we could only communicate through pointing, but I thought about it recently and decided to give it a Google. I didn’t find too much but what I did find in some 10 year old forums was that the film itself may have violent tones to it and then I went down a rabbit hole learning about chromogenic b&w film.
XP2 Plus is intended to be developed with the C41 process that is used to develop color film. I first learned to shoot film on Ilford Delta, not completely knowing what that meant I was familiar with the Ilford brand as the chemistry in the lab was also from them.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
